What is Thai yoga massage?

The ancient healing art of Thai yoga massage (also known as Nuad Pen Boran or simply Thai massage) is growing in popularity in the West.

It combines acupressure work with applied yoga stretches to rebalance energy and detoxify the system. Sometimes referred to as ‘lazy man's yoga’ or ‘applied hatha yoga’. It also helps the body become more flexible and relaxed.

It is extremely beneficial for people suffering from C.F.S. or M.E., M.S., depression and insomnia and can be adapted by the experienced practitioner to be a treat for those who are pregnant or enjoyed by anyone who simply needs to relax and have a good stretch.

During the massage, we work specific sen lines (energy lines) using our hands, feet and elbows and stretch the body into various yoga-like postures. This all helps to release energetic blockages, balance energy and improve flexibility.

Thai yoga massage shares a common heritage with yoga, having been developed over 2,500 years ago in India. The Northern style massage practiced and taught by Gareth and Chantal, can typically last for around two hours. This is unlike the southern style Thai massage, which is usually shorter and has fewer yoga related stretches.

What to expect

Unlike other forms of massage, Thai yoga massage takes place with the recipient fully clothed on a futon on the floor. It is a holistic and truly 'full-body' treatment, from back to front, side-to-side, top of the head to the tips of the fingers and toes.

Typical routine (unless you're pregnant)

You begin lying on your back and we work from the feet, up the front of the body, working energy lines using therapeutic pressure points and appropriate yoga stretches. Then rolling onto one side, then the other, you may be carefully stretched, twisted and sometimes lifted, before moving onto your front so we can work all the way up the back of your body.

After working the back, you may be put into a seated position or remain lying so we can access your shoulders and neck before moving on to your head for an Indian head massage like finish.

By the end of the treatment, you are likely to feel both relaxed and energised, but that's not where it ends. The effects of the massage may last up to 4-5 days while toxins leave your body, the energetic balancing takes place and your muscles and joints respond to the workout they've had.

All treatments take place at our central Cheltenham venue. If you would like to treat a friend to this amazing experience, gift vouchers are available!
